Outcome Measures
Primary Outcomes (1)
Pre-dialysis AVF awareness score
Mean score of knowledge regarding arteriovenous fistula creation (including its use for hemodialysis, need for pre-dialysis preparation, maturation time, arm protection, and differences from catheter) assessed by a structured questionnaire. For patients already on maintenance hemodialysis, awareness will be assessed retrospectively for the period before dialysis initiation.
Baseline
Secondary Outcomes (5)
Proportion with prior AVF counseling
Baseline
Vascular access used at first hemodialysis session
Baseline
Timing of AVF creation
Baseline
Willingness to undergo AVF creation
Baseline
Sources of AVF information

Study Arms (1)
Single cohort: Adults with advanced CKD
Adults with advanced chronic kidney disease (pre-dialysis stage 4-5 and maintenance hemodialysis patients) who will complete a structured questionnaire assessing awareness of arteriovenous fistula creation.
Eligibility Criteria
Adults with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD stage 4-5 not on maintenance hemodialysis or currently receiving maintenance hemodialysis) attending the Nephrology Unit and Maintenance Hemodialysis Unit of Assiut University Hospital.
You may qualify if:
- Age 18 years or older
- Documented chronic kidney disease
- CKD stage 4-5 not on maintenance hemodialysis OR currently on maintenance hemodialysis for established CKD
- Able to understand and answer the questionnaire
- Written informed consent
You may not qualify if:
- Acute kidney injury without established CKD
- Previous kidney transplantation (if considered to affect homogeneity)
- Severe cognitive or communication impairment preventing reliable questionnaire completion
- Unable or unwilling to provide informed consent
- Inability to provide reasonably reliable information about the pre-dialysis period (for retrospective questions)
