Brief Summary

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of an ankle brace, functional taping, and no prophylactic method on maximum inversion angle, inversion velocity, peroneus longus reaction time, and subjective perception of instability during a simulated inversion task in adolescent basketball players with chronic ankle instability. It is hypothesised that the use of these prophylactic methods will result in better outcomes across the analysed variables, potentially contributing to a reduced risk of inversion sprains.

Outcome Measures

Primary Outcomes (4)

  • Maximum inversion

    Highest point of inversion reached after the onset of the inversion. Calculated by determining the absolute difference between the amplitude at the onset of inversion and the point at which the foot reached its maximum inversion (in degrees)

    From the onset of inversion to the point of maximum inversion.

  • Inversion Velocity

    Was calculated from the moment the inversion began until the point at which the mechanical response for eversion started (in degree per second)

    During the inversion-to-eversion movement.

  • Reaction Time of the Peroneus Longus

    Refers to the duration it took for the muscle to initiate contraction following the onset of inversion (in milliseconds)

    From the onset of inversion to the initiation of muscle contraction.

  • Subjective Perception of Instability

    Refers to the sensation that the ankle feels unstable or at risk of giving way during physical activities

    Immediately after the inversion test.

Ankle Brace

EXPERIMENTAL

The ankle brace model used in this study was the STRONG 500 ankle brace (TARMAK, Tourcoing, France). The ankle brace was applied in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.

Functional taping

EXPERIMENTAL

Functional taping was performed using pre-tape and tape (3.8 cm x 10 cm) from the WolfCare brand (Caxias, Portugal).

No Prophylactic Method

NO INTERVENTION

The absence of a prophylactic method refers to data collection from participants who did not have any material applied to the ankle.

Eligibility Criteria

Age12 Years - 19 Years

Age GroupsChild (0-17), Adult (18-64)

You may qualify if:

  • Be an active basketball player;
  • Be aged between 12 and 19 years;
  • Have sustained an ankle sprain within the previous 12 months, accompanied by inflammatory signs (e.g., pain, oedema, restricted range of motion), which resulted in at least one day of absence from physical activity;
  • Have experienced their most recent ankle injury more than three months prior to enrolment in the study;
  • Report a history of ankle sprains and/or episodes of mechanical giving way and/or perceived ankle instability;
  • Achieve a score greater than 11 on the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) questionnaire.

You may not qualify if:

  • A previous history of lower-limb surgery;
  • A history of fracture requiring realignment in one or both lower limbs;
  • An acute injury affecting another lower-limb joint within the previous three months that resulted in at least one day of absence from physical activity.
