Brief Summary
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of nitrocamptothecin plus etoposide in treating patients who have advanced solid tumors.

Outcome Measures
Primary Outcomes (1)
Maximum Tolerated Dose (MTD)
Determine the MTD of nitrocamptothecin. Cohorts of 3-6 patients receive escalating doses of nitrocamptothecin until the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is determined. The MTD is defined as the dose preceding that at which 2 of 6 patients experience dose limiting toxicities.

Study Arms (1)
Combination Therapy
EXPERIMENTALCombination Therapy with Oral 9-Nitrocamptothecin \& Oral Etoposide. Patients receive oral nitrocamptothecin on days 1-3 and oral etoposide on days 4-5 each week. Treatment continues in the absence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.
