Brief Summary
The aim of this project is to refine the couples-focused intervention with up to 24 adults with unhealthy alcohol use and their partners (N=12 couples) to obtain feedback on the intervention content and structure, as well as the acceptability and feasibility of the intervention to guide further refinements.

Couples Counseling
EXPERIMENTALA four-session couples based counseling protocol delivered via telehealth
Interventions
A four-session couples based counseling program to reduce alcohol use while enhancing relationship functioning and support for each partner.
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if:
- at least 18 years of age;
- in a primary intimate relationship with one partner for at least 6 months;
- able to provide informed consent; and
- able to speak and read English.
- For the couple to be eligible:
- at least one member must report engaging in past 3-month unhealthy alcohol use (cisgender men: drinking \>14 drinks a week or 5+ drinks in a day at least once a month; all other participants: drinking \>7 drinks a week or 4+ drinks in a day at least once a month;
- the second member of the couple must drink alcohol at least monthly.
You may not qualify if:
- Couples will be excluded if either participant within a dyad:
- Reports a history of seizures or delirium tremens during alcohol withdrawal, which may make supervised alcohol detoxification necessary if the participant chooses to reduce drinking.
- Endorses any item indicating severe physical or sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) by their current partner on the screening measure adapted from the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2).
- Reports feeling coerced into study participation or indicates that study participation could place them at risk of harm from their partner.
