Brief Summary
The goal of this clinical trial was to learn whether Reiki given before colonoscopy affects patients' anxiety and comfort. The main questions were: Does Reiki reduce anxiety? Does Reiki improve comfort? Researchers compared Reiki with sham Reiki (a procedure designed to resemble Reiki) and routine care. Seventy-six patients were randomly assigned to one of the three groups. Participants: Received one Reiki session, one sham Reiki session, or routine care before colonoscopy Completed questionnaires about anxiety and comfort

Outcome Measures
Primary Outcomes (2)
Anxiety
State anxiety (anxiety at the time of assessment) and trait anxiety (a general tendency to feel anxious) were measured using the short forms of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S and STAI-T). Higher scores indicate greater anxiety.
40 minutes before colonoscopy (before Reiki or sham Reiki) and 20 minutes after completion of colonoscopy.
Comfort
Patient comfort, patients rated their comfort on a 0-10 scale, where 0 means no comfort and 10 means the highest possible comfort. Interviewer 1 recorded their responses.
40 minutes before colonoscopy (before Reiki or sham Reiki) and 20 minutes after completion of colonoscopy.
Study Arms (3)
Reiki group
EXPERIMENTALParticipants received a single Level 1 Reiki session approximately 30 minutes before colonoscopy, administered by a researcher trained and experienced in the Usui method.
Sham reiki
PLACEBO COMPARATORParticipants received a single sham Reiki session approximately 30 minutes before colonoscopy, administered by a person who had not received Reiki training or initiation. The procedure was presented to participants as Reiki.
Control
NO INTERVENTIONRoutine care
Interventions
Participants received one 25-30-minute Level 1 Reiki session at nine specified areas of the body. The session was administered before colonoscopy by a researcher initiated into Reiki, in accordance with the study protocol.
In addition to routine care, participants received one 25-30-minute sham Reiki session at nine specified areas of the body before colonoscopy. The session followed the study protocol and was administered by Interviewer 2, who had not been initiated into Reiki.

- Masking Details
- Participants in the Reiki and sham Reiki groups were unaware of which procedure they received. Participants in the routine care group did not observe the other procedures. Interviewer 1, who administered the questionnaires, was unaware of group assignments during outcome assessment. The Reiki practitioner and Interviewer 2, who administered sham Reiki, knew which procedures they delivered. The statistician analyzed data labeled with group codes without knowing what the codes represented.
