Brief Summary

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn the effect of self prepare by multimedia program before going to heart surgery. The main questions it aim to answer is: Is preparing for heart surgery on your own or with a physical therapist the same? Researchers were compare the effects of preoperative physical therapy between multimedia and traditional programs in patients undergoing open heart surgery. Participants were received traditional therapy from a physical therapist or used a multimedia self-learning program.

Primary Outcomes (1)

  • Chest expansion

    Chest expansion (both upper and lower) using a measuring tape

    Before and immediately after receiving the preoperative program

Secondary Outcomes (1)

  • Preoperative knowledge

    Immediately after receiving the preoperative program on the same day with chest expansion assessment.

A two-dimensional (2D) animated video preoperative physical therapy program

Other: Multimedia preoperative progarm

Interventions

A two-dimensional (2D) animated video was developed to deliver educational content regarding open-heart surgery procedures (sternotomy and general anesthesia), the preoperative physical therapy program (diaphragmatic breathing, lower-lobe breathing, and chest expansion exercises), potential postoperative complications (e.g., pneumonia and atelectasis), therapeutic exercises (ankle pumping), and mobility training (bed mobility and transitioning from lying to a sitting position)

Age18 Years - 70 Years

Age GroupsAdult (18-64), Older Adult (65+)

You may qualify if:

  • Patients who undergoing elective open-heart surgery at the Queen Sirikit Heart Center of the Northeast, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Thailand
  • Age 18-70 years old
  • No lung atelectasis
  • No communication limit

You may not qualify if:

  • Lung diseases such as COPD, Asthme
  • Hearing loss, blind and learning problem

Model Details: The control groups received a traditional preoperative program from an experienced physical therapist and the experimental groups received a preoperative self-learning with multimedia program. All the patients in both groups also received the leaflet about preoperative program guidelines.
