Brief Summary
This single-group quasi-experimental study will evaluate the effectiveness and durability of a fluorescent hand hygiene training program for first-year nursing students at a Polish university. Students will complete the WHO Hand Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire and undergo Glo Germ-based fluorescent assessment of handwashing technique at baseline, immediately after the training, approximately two weeks later, at the end of the first semester, and just before their first clinical placements. The primary objective is to determine whether the training improves and sustains hand hygiene technique quality over time, while secondary objectives include changes in hand hygiene knowledge and the relationship between knowledge and technique

Quality of hand hygiene technique assessed with fluorescent Glo Germ
Baseline, immediately post-training, approximately 2 weeks post-training, end of first semester, and just before first clinical placements
Quality of hand hygiene technique assessed with fluorescent Glo Germ
Hand hygiene technique will be evaluated at five time points using Glo Germ fluorescent lotion and UV light. After applying fluorescent lotion, students wash their hands as usual; residual fluorescence indicating missed areas is recorded by the investigator on a standardized checklist (e.g., fingertips, thumbs, interdigital spaces, dorsal surfaces). The primary outcome will be the proportion of students achieving adequate technique (no or minimal missed areas) and changes in individual technique scores over time

Fluorescent Hand Hygiene Training Arm
EXPERIMENTALInterventions
First-year nursing students receive a standardized fluorescent hand hygiene training session using Glo Germ lotion and UV light. The session includes a brief review of WHO hand hygiene indications, demonstration of proper handwashing technique, application of fluorescent lotion, handwashing by the student, and visual feedback of missed areas under UV illumination. Students repeat handwashing until adequate coverage is achieved. This training is delivered early in the first semester and its effects are assessed at immediate, short-term, semester-end, and pre-clinical time points
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if:
- First-year nursing students enrolled at Powiślańska Academy of Applied Sciences in Kwidzyn during the study period.
- Aged 18 years or older.
- Able to provide written informed consent.
- Able to participate in the planned educational activities.
You may not qualify if:
- Known allergy or skin intolerance to Glo Germ™ /gel or similar products.
- Current dermatological condition of the hands that precludes the use of fluorescent lotion/gel or repeated handwashing (e.g., severe eczema or open wounds).
- Previous participation in a pilot study or an earlier version of the same fluorescent hand-hygiene training at this institution.
