NCT04128241

Brief Summary

Introduction: excess body weight is a growing and underestimated problem recognized as a worldwide epidemic. The collective difficulty and frustration to achieve healthy lifestyles, has caused the emergence of the named fad diets. In addition to the uncertainties of efficacy and safety of this diets, there is a lack of research to help establish the scope of the problem, and the knowledge, attitudes and practices of the general population. Objective: to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes (positive and negative) and practices on fad diets in a panel of consumers of socio-demographic characteristics assimilated to the Spanish population. Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study through non-validated and self-administered online Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices survey (KAP survey), on a sample of 2 600 adult consumers (non-probabilistic quota sampling). Primary outcomes: knowledge, attitudes and practices on fad diets. Data analysis: the association of each outcome with sociodemographic and socio-economic data will be assessed, and the differences between calculated scores as well as trends in different domains according to age, educational level and income level will be assessed (point estimates and confidence intervals 95%).

Outcome Measures

Primary Outcomes (3)

  • Score indicator of Knowledge

The knowledge domain is the individual understanding about fad diets and will be measured through a module of a KAP survey (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices survey; http://www.fao.org/3/a-i3545e.pdf) by up to 8 key categorized questions that would adress this domain. Knowledge questions may have a single or several answers. The key questions will be related to the knowledge about definition, kind of popular diets , health impact and others side effects, potential effectiveness, etc. The surveyor will be able to establish if the surveyed "Knows" or "Does not knows" and the "number of correct answers" for every question. A Score of knowledge can be estimated as follows: sum of correct/knows responses given by all respondents / Total number of respondents.

  • Score indicator of Attitudes

The attitudes domain are emotions, motivations, perceptions and beliefs that respondent positively or negatively perceives to adopt or not a given fad diet. Attitudes will be measured through a module of a KAP survey (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices survey; http://www.fao.org/3/a-i3545e.pdf) by up to 8 key three-point likert scales questions. The following specific subdomains will be assessed: (a) attitudes about negative impact of fad diets: perceived susceptibility and severity; (b) Attitudes about whether or not following a given fad diet and / or official dietary guidelines: benefits and barriers perceived, self-confidence, preparation for change. Questions in this modules will be developed based on the Health Belief Model. Surveyor will be able to establish the intensity of respondents' attitudes towards fad diets, and a score of attitudes can be estimated as follows: sum of total respondents score / Total number of respondents

  • Indicator of Practices

Indicator of Practices: The practices domain are observable actions of an individual which are associated with the follow-up of fad diets. Practices will be measured through a module of a KAP survey (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices survey; http://www.fao.org/3/a-i3545e.pdf) by up to 8 key yes/no questions. Practice questions will be related to follow-up or not of a fad diet, the positive or negative impact perceived or the number of diets followed. Surveyor will be able to establish the overall intensity of respondents' practices towards fad diets.

Study Arms (1)

Panel of Spanish consumers

A panel of Spanish consumers recruited from various audited and validated internet databases.

Eligibility Criteria

Age18 Years - 65 Years
Sexall
Healthy VolunteersYes
Age GroupsAdult (18-64), Older Adult (65+)
Sampling MethodNon-Probability Sample
Study Population

There will be a non-probabilistic sampling by quotas of Internet consumers, previously segmented and verified, establishing quotas of age, sex and autonomous community proportional to the Spanish national scope, so, although in itself it will not be a representative sample of the Spanish population will have similar sociodemographic characteristics. Of the 159 195 Internet users that make up the general database of the Spanish population between 18 and 65 years of age, a stratified random sample will be obtained to ensure the recruitment of participants that have similar sociodemographic characteristics to the Spanish population.

You may qualify if:

  • age between 18-65 years old
  • male/Female
  • spanish Nationality
  • be a consumer of an audited and verified internet portal

You may not qualify if:

  • age out of the range
  • be of a different nationality than the Spanish
  • be an internet consumer of an unaudited portal
